Lee Friedlander is an American photographer, who mainly took pictures of urban landscapes. Friedlander's pictures are of people, signs, and a lot of reflections of himself or of someone else. In the first picture above, I very much like the way it was done. This picture makes me feel uneasy for the woman in the photo. With a very oppressive shadow right behind this woman who is taking a walk in the city. This picture was taken in New York City in 1965, if you look around the photo you see a busy New York City with cars on the road and with people on the street, but in the photo the main focus is of the woman with the beautiful fur coat and the ominous shadow creeping up behind her with unknown implications. The shadow could also represent the power of New York City. I mean this by that shadow could be this woman's confidence and power to start become more equal. In 1965 women started to get more rights. In 1963 Congress passes the Equal Pay Act making it illegal to pay a woman less than a man would get for the same job, and in 1965 Congress strikes down one remaining state law that prohibited the use of contraceptives by married couples. All I am trying to say is that everything is different to everyone and that thoughts come and go as you learn and grow.
Lee Friedlander 1966 New York
This is one of my favorite photos by Friedlander, not only is it visually appealing with the mirror which seems to be the focus of the picture. In this focus you see a dog and dog house on which looks to be a front law of someones house. Out of the focus you see a group of soldiers marching. To the left you see a woman and a child looking off at the soldiers. The main reason I enjoy this photo so much is because this photo was taken in 1966 the Vietnam War was just started. You see a woman who has children who is watching the men that would go off into war unsure if they would be coming back. The way I see this photo is the men on the right marching into the mirror for what could be the American dream, A house with a dog and a wife and child. These soldiers are fighting for their country and the way I see it they are fighting for what is in the mirror, and also fighting for the woman and child they are leaving behind to go fight.

This photo makes me uneasy, you have a TV with a child's face on it and two dark doorways. The first thing you notice is the Television with a grainy child's face on it. The second thing I noticed was the two dark hallways. Friedlander had a way of creating photos with so many implication. This photo uses darkness as a way to create mystery as you cannot tell what is through those doors. The way I see this picture is how the future is uncertain. The child on the TV is the main focus of this picture and those two dark doorways could be the future of this child. Both of these doorways are dark and it's impossible to know what is in the darkness unless you go into it.
