Michael Kenna

Image
Michael Kenna Joe Seck Art 227 9/30/20 Michael Kenna is known for his black and white landscape photos, the way he does his photos consist of taking photos at early dawn or sometime in the night. His photos give some sort of a ethereal feeling, he does this by having a long exposure time of around 10-12 hours. Which is a crazy amount of time, but is so worth for the outcome of his photos, most of which remind me of my fathers work which he would hang around the house.  This photo is the first picture in Kenna's collection that really caught my eye. This photos focus is of the trees towards the right of the frame. The trees have what look like some sort of tractor trails going towards the camera, but there is another thing in this photo that captures my interest. This being the trees in the left part of the picture. This photo gives me the feeling of someone being left out. I feel that the trees in focus are the trees that everyone wants to see while the trees in the back left are o...

Man Ray

Image
Man Ray Joe Seck September 30 2020 Art 227 Man Ray was an important influencer in the Dada and Surrealist movements. Man Ray did a lot in the art area, most of his works are paintings, photographs, and photograms, or as he called them "Rayographs". Most of Ray's work consisted of models and a few of which he had dated. Ray's work consisted of mostly portraits of people either, the face, eye, or some portion of the body. Ray did work in some of the worlds most influential cities, these being Paris, Hollywood, and New York City.  This is one of my favorite works by Man Ray, one of his "Rayograms". This work looks really impressive, I liked it so much because it looks like someone is holding the world in their hands. This was done by exposing the object to a certain amount of light while he put his hands over the object and moves them back and forth to create the appearance of the hands in motion.  This is by far my favorite work by Man Ray. The way the little...

Lee Friedlander

Image
Lee Friedlander September 3 2020 Joe Seck       Lee Friedlander is an American photographer, who mainly took pictures of urban landscapes. Friedlander's pictures are of people, signs, and a lot of reflections of himself or of someone else. In the first picture above, I very much like the way it was done. This picture makes me feel uneasy for the woman in the photo. With a very oppressive shadow right behind this woman who is taking a walk in the city. This picture was taken in New York City in 1965, if you look around the photo you see a busy New York City with cars on the road and with people on the street, but in the photo the main focus is of the woman with the beautiful fur coat and the ominous shadow creeping up behind her with unknown implications. The shadow could also represent the power of New York City. I mean this by that shadow could be this woman's confidence and power to start become more equal. In 1965 women started to ge...
